The region of Diego-Suarez
 

Diego-Suarez is before anything else an island bay renowned for it's "Pain de sucre", it is the 2nd largest bay in the world after Rio de Janeiro. But Diego-Suarez also has a history, you can find many interesting stories.

Firstly its name which is a result of two separate bloody colonizations at the beginning of the 16th century : Diego Diaz in 1500 and Admiral Suarez some years later.

This was followed by the period of French colonization, during which
Diego was a flourishing port and a very prosperous city.

You can still find many remnants of that period when exploring Diego.

The colonial houses that border the principal arterial roads are the most beautiful examples of that era.

Diego also offers you many other wonderful sites :

  • Some of the beautiful beaches in the north of Madagascar, "Ramena" and "La Mer d'Emeraude"

  • The unique and spectacular view-points from "La Montagne des Français" and "Windsor Castle"

  • The chance to discover the tropical forest of the "Montagne d'Ambre"

  • The extraordinary "tsing de l'Ankarana" and the equally unique "tsing rouges" of Irodo

  • The sacred lake and his crocodiles, which is surrounded in legend
